Bull Terriers Open Show 17th February 2024

A big thank you to The Bull Terrier Club for inviting me to judge this years Open Show at the Annual Trophy weekend – such a privillage for which I am very grateful. Also a big thank you to all the exhibitors that made the journey from all over Europe making an entry of 89 animals and it was amazing to see so many friends old and new around the ring – from all over the world. The room was filled to the rafters and with the accompanying mini show kicking-off the proceedings, the atmosphere electric.

Mouths were for the most part good and the majority of animals were presented in superb condition.

Puppy Dog: 1st Ragnarok Halfdan The Black
11 month old, black brindle and white dog – head strong and filled with a good finish. Mouth correct. Neat, well placed ears, a good reach of neck into a well laid shoulder – a short back, level topline into well defined hinds with good solid bone. A super mature puppy, all wrapped in a gleaming black coat. He was slow to settle on the move, but once he got into his stride, he really covered the ground. Shown and handled well, definately one to watch. PD and BP

2nd More Than A Feeling Off Daikini
7 month old, brindle and white dog – head long and strong with a good finish. Mouth correct. Neat, well placed ears, which he could have used a little more to his advantage. A good reach of neck into a level topline, short back and a straight front – overall a well balanced body, although I would like a little more rear angulaton. Moved well and with purpose. Shown and handled well.

Junior Dog: 1st Leo Messi Hooligan’s Bull
14 month old white boy with black ears. A super balanced dog – Head long and strong and well filled. A wicked expression with neat erect ears. Mouth correct. A good reach of neck, a well laid shoulder and short back, with strong bone. He has a powerful, compact body with shapely well muscled hind quarters, although his feet are a little untidy. He moved well both ways really covering the ground. Shown and handled well.

2nd Vampire Off Ditroys
14 Month old pure white boy. Another quality dog, but different type from 1st. His head is super long, with a sweeping profile with good fill and a wicked expression. Mouth correct. A super dog with a good length of leg and a well balanced body – he just lacks a little maturity. Strong bone, a straight front and a well angulated rear – he moved well both ways. A very promising youngster with a lot more to come.

1st Westbul Mister Chapa
16 month brindle and white boy. His head is strong, with a long profile with just enough fill with neat erect ears. Mouth correct. A super athletic, well balanced, body with a good reach of neck, a powerful fore chest with a well sprung rib and strong rear quaters. His front straight with good round bone and tight feet. Shown in gleaming condition. Moved well although he carries his tail a little high.

2nd Dofro Hail And Storm
3.5 year old compact white dog with black eye mark – A well filled head with a long, strong profile and a wicked expression, neat well placed ears. Mouth correct. A short compact body, a good reach of neck into a well laid shoulder with enough bone for his size. Well muscled and in super condition. Moved well both ways.

Limit Dog: 1st Yoeckydoe’s V Max
20 month old heavyweight, dark brindle an white boy. A strong, well filled head with a good depth of muzzle and a good finish. Mouth correct. Neat triangular ears, although a little low set. A powerful neck, strong shoulders and a powerful forechest. Shown in fit, hard condition. A deep brisket, level topline, although a little long in the back, with strong, angulated rear quarters. Moved with purpose – covering good ground, his handler getting the best out of him.

2nd King Of Seduction Off Daikini
2.5 year old, rich tiger brindle dog. His head is strong, with good fill and finish, with a powerful underjaw. Mouth correct. A good reach of neck, a well laid shoulder and powerful forechest. He has a good front, deep brisket, level topline although a little straight in the rear, with super toght feet. Moved better coming than going, well handled.

Open Dog: 1st Bullem Gwenbully Legacy
3.5 year old Tri-colour dog. A powerful, upstanding dog oozing masculinity. Head long and strong with good fill and turn. Mouth correct. Neat, well placed ears which he uses freely and to his advantage. A good reach of neck into well laid shoulder, short back over a deep brisket. His front is straight, showing strong, round bone and neat feet with a pronounced arch to his toes. A well set tail and a well muscled rear with good angulation and a strong second thigh, shown in good fit condition. He moved well, covering the ground and enjoying every moment – a very confident dog, showing himself to his best. BD and BOS.

2nd Ir Ch. Demolitionforce Tarasbulba
Another quality dog. 2.5 years old boy in super condition, his red and white coat was rich and course to the touch. He has a powerful head, filled right up with a good finish, with well placed, neat ears. Mouth correct. A strong neck into a well balanced body. A good lay of shoulder, short back with level top line, a deep brisket with good round bone – a strong forechest and well muscled thigh. Moved well and with drive, although a little close behind. Handled well and was shown to perfection. RBD.

10 month old feminine, white bitch. Strong head with a gentle profile, well filled with neat erect ears and a wicked expression. Mouth correct. A well balanced, compact bitch with adequate bone for her size. A straight front, good reach of neck and a well laid shoulder. A level top line into a well angulated rear. She moves off with purpose and covers the ground well. well presented and in super condition.

8 months old black brindle puppy bitch. A long head with a sweeping profile and good fill. Mouth correct. Neat erect ears, although she uses them sparingly. Well marked with a gleaming coat. A good reach of neck, a level topline, a short back with a good spring of rib and just enough rear angulation. She moved well once she got going.

15 month old, gleaming white girl. Super feminine with a beautiful head, long profile, filled right up with a good finish. Mouth correct. Two neat, well placed, erect ears, a long, elegant neck into a lovely short back, a straight front, powerful forechest, strong bone and a well sprung rib, finished off with a well angulated, well muscled rear quarter – moved well and with with drive. Shown and handled well.

2nd Lisandra Hooligan’s Bull
14 month old, well marked red and white bitch. Another super quality bitch. Feminine head, sweeping profile with good fill. Mouth correct. Neat erect ears, which she uses to her advantage. Beautiful neck into a well placed shoulder and straight front into a level topline. Moved well and with drive when she got into her stride. Shown in great condition.

1st Bluepoint Flye fox
18 month old compact white bitch with a brindle eye patch. Her head is powerful, filled and turned – yet remains feminine. Mouth correct. She has a strong neck into a well laid, well muscled shoulder and a super short back with a level topline. A straight front, deep forchest with a well angulateted rear quarter. Shown in fit, hard condition, moved with drive and handle to perfection – pushed hard for top honours.

2nd Clansmann Flame of Gory
2.5 year old feminine yet powerful bitch. A long head, with good fill although lacks a little finish. Mouth correct. She has neat well placed ears, a good reach of neck with a well laid shoulder. A short back, level topline, strong forechest with good depth. A well angulated rear, although lacks a little power. Moved well – she never stopped showing.

3.5 year old white bitch with a red eye patch. A feminine bitch with a long head and gentle profile. Mouth correct. An elegant neck into a good lay of shoulder, level topline and straight front and a well angulated rear. Well balanced bodylines although lacking a little bone. Moved well and with purpose.

2nd Like a Phenomenon Off Daikini
Also in Post Graduate Bitch class. 2.5 year old compact brindle and white bitch. A feminine yet powerful head with good depth. Neat erect ears, good reach of neck into a good lay of shoulder. A short back with good substance. Nice tight feet although she has a tendancy to turn them out a little in front. Moved well, shown and handled well.

Open Bitch: 1st Skylark’s Union Jack
3 year old red and white bitch, that I have long admired. A true balance of power and femininity. Head strong, with lots of fill, gently curving to the tip of her nose. She has a small eye with very neat erect ears. A well marked rich red coat, coarse to the touch. A strong neck into a level topline with a super short back. A beautiful straight front with lots of bone. An overall well balanced bitch, powerful and well muscled – in great condition. Moved with purpose, covering the ground with ease. Handled to perfection. BB and BOB.

Another super quality white bitch, a real powerhouse! A strong, well filled head – turned and finished. Mouth correct. A strong neck into a well laid shoulder, a well muscled front showing plenty of bone. A short back, a good spring of rib and deep brisket. A level topline with a well angulated rear quarter. She moved positive and with drive. A super bitch that showed her socks off, a really tough competion with 1st placed. RBB.

Another super bitch at almost 9 years of age. Substantial white bitch with a black eye patch. Strong head with neat erect ears that she uses to her advantage. Well balanced bitch in super condition, looks like she really enjoys her biscuits.

Judges Critique – Miniature Bull Terriers Open Show 17th February 2024

I’d like to firstly thank the BTC for the invitation to judge MBT at this prestigious event. Many thanks to the exhibitors, some who travelled from afar for giving me the opportunity to judge their dogs, the quality was first class. I had some tuff decisions to make and some quality dogs went un rewarded.

PD 1st GIFFENBULL NUVOLE BIANCHE WITH STORMHOLD Mrs E Summerville
Blk Bri / white small compact male with a good downturned profile which has width and fill, small dark eye and well placed ears.mouth fault. Good reach of neck into a straight front, would prefer more length to upper arm.Good spring of rib and depth of brisket into a short back. Enough bone for size and held his top line on the move, up on his toes and attentive to his handler. Moved ok BOS

2nd GIFFENBULL ENCORE OF ARIBAX MR R Martin
Solid brindle with enough turn of profile, good length of head with fill and a small dark eye with well placed ears. Good reach of neck with decent spring of rib.longer cast than 1st, would prefer more length to upper arm. His rear is muscular and his feet tight . Moved ok once settled.

Solid brindle with a gentle profile, fill and width. Small dark well placed eye and ears bang on top which were used well once settled. Good reach of neck into a clean straight front,and good depth of brisket. Ample bone for size with a moderate length of back. Well angulated at the rear with tidy tight feet. Moved a touch close going but held his top line.

White with good length of head,sweeping profile and fill. The darkest of eye giving good expression with correct ear placement. Long elegant neck into a straight front with a good lay of shoulder. A touch long cast with ample spring of rib. Good angular rear quarters with good bone. Moved ok

White with gentle turn of profile and enough fill, would like a little More width to muzzle . Good length of neck into a clean front with enough bone for size. Moderate length of back and well bent stifles, neat feet. Moved ok both ways covering the ground with ease.

This was by far the class of the day, full of type ! The quality was second to none and many quality bitches went un rewarded.

Feminine White with eye marking, long head with fill and down turn. Super eye and ear placement giving her excellent expression. Long elegant neck into a straight front with a good lay of shoulder. Feminine white, her head is packed with fill and has the tiniest of dark eyes and Small well used ears give her a wicked expression. Beautiful reach of neck into a straight strong front, ample spring of rib and muscular rear. She moved freely around the ring up on her toes . RBOB

Solid red in excellent condition, with just enough profile.small well placed dark eye. Straight front and enough bone for her size. Well bent stifle and second thigh. Moved ok once she got going.

Judges Critique – Bull Terriers Open Show 19th May 2024

I wish to thank the Bull Terrier Club for the fabulous opportunity to judge the Lichfield show. Wonderful entry, superb location and the nicest people.  A big thank you to Shaun Mathison and Dr. Joao Salvado for their assistance in the ring.  And a special thank you to our greatest asset in England, the friendship of Pete and Anna Blair and Steve Bradder and Julie Bradder whose generosity was above and beyond what anyone would expect.  Seeing you all is already a joy, but being treated like family is a privilege I won’t soon forget. Lastly a thank you to Dr. Dinu Catilina and Lisa for their hospitality and the opportunity to spend time with them and Hannah and Alfred.  If I thought of an ideal trip in my mind, it would never be this good and you all made me feel appreciated and I hope you know how lucky I am to have you all in my life!

1st QUENTINHILL ARMAGEDDON (MS J SZEWCZYK) 
The overall impression is one of potential.  A brindle and white youngster with a nice headpiece.  Width and filled he length of his muzzle, good dentition.  Compact body holding his topline level.  Elbows tight as they should be.   As would be expected, movement a bit difficult to assess as this happy youngster was excited to be there.  What small bit I was able to glean was good in both directions. BP

1st JAVARKE MUNDOO (MRS J JOHNSON) 
Went to this nicely profiled black brindle.  Packed head with a brilliant wide muzzle, terrific eye placement and he uses his ears well.   His front shoulder is not ideal, but his topline remains true.  Terrific bone and outstanding rear angulation.   His ribs are starting to spring, adding to his strong appearance.  Also, on the plus side he moved reasonably well in both directions.  He was in good condition and handled to perfection. RBD

2nd KARMARA’S SUGAR DADDY (MRS & MR R & T KARTA-WILLIAMS & WILLIAMS)
This white with head markings 14 month old was very pleasing.  He finished 2nd in this class on his front shoulder and less bone compared to the class winner. On the plus side his head is quite nice with a sweeping profile, long and strong and finished well.  His expression does not suffer.  As mentioned, his shoulder is not ideal but follows his type.  Rear angulation is spot with a strong second thigh.  Lovely feet add to his many virtues.

1st DEVARCA ANYTHING GOES (MRS & MR R & J SULLIVAN)
Substantial brindle and white, well balanced with good make, shape and bite.   Strong head but ultimately could not match the strength of the winner. Strong bone good spring of rib and strong hind quarters.  His movement coming is not his strong point but his drive going was correct.  Topline down to tail set was correct. Well-conditioned dog and a joy to go over.

1st KENXTWEN LET’S GO (MISS A TOWNEND)
A thug of a red and white.  Excellent quality and good proportions.  From his head to his bone, he is packing power into a small space.  A captivating picture where his neck blends into a short back and correct tail.  Lovely feet. His movement going is powerful, but his movement coming is his major downfall and his biggest cross to bear.

1st NAPIER PURE COPPER (MR & MRS M & T FLETCHER)
Red and white, this fellow is well put together with mixes of balance, bone and substance.  Extremely powerful headpiece, long, strong with plenty of turn.  Keen well placed eye, a correct mouth and tidy ears.   Ideal shoulder assembly into a long neck and short back.  The aforementioned huge, round bone standing on tight cat feet.  Gun barrel front with depth of brisket.  All of these virtues translated into strong coming and going movements with drive to smile about.  Ultimately leading to his taking the top prize of Best in Show.  Compliments to his owner! BD BIS

1st SELBULLIE CHINA WHITE AT KINOKEYA (MR BURNIKELL)
A quite lovely white with head markings whose expression jumps out immediately.  A lovely head surrounds that glinting eye with small ears and a good mouth.  Correct topline puts her ahead of the second in this class.  Her front shoulder is not perfect, but she moved nicely when her puppy enthusiasm allowed for it.  Plenty of time to grow and mature and she should be one to watch.

2nd GULWINGS LEAVE IT OUT LOVE (MR & MRS G G & S E TOMLINSON)
Second in this class, this red and white was nonetheless lovely.  Long smooth turned head with good bite.  Bone and substance are adequate, and she moves decently both ways, but I would wish for stronger and shorter topline.   She was also full of herself and made her handler work a bit.  I would like to see her with a few more pounds but maturity and experience will help.  A nifty little package.

1st VATAHA THE KARMACOMA (MISS A BARTKOWIAK)
A very good red and white youngster who has beautiful clean lines.  She sparkles showing off her exceptional head with the sweeping profile love by many.  Piercing dark eyes.  She has moderate shoulder angulation which is her most significant fault.  Rear angulation is lovely along with correct tail carriage.  Movement coming is affected by the should but going is strong with power and drive.  Bone was above average as were her feet. Presented and shown well.

2nd JAVARKE GALADRIEL AT ADRELLBULZ (MISS L M DAVISON)
Black and white young lady who was a bit more reserved in her performance today. She has a nice feminine head with good length and turn. Good length of neck and she moved decently both ways though I would wish for a stronger and shorter topline. Excellent all around but less interested in being there and that cost her on the day.

1st JAVARKE FAIRY WREN (MRS J JOHNSON)
A lovely brindle and white whose power is front and center.  She had poise and flair. Very good head with nice turn, lacking a bit in fill and muzzle width.  After that she just checks box after box for front construction, bone, feet.  Good fore chest and foreleg.  Hindquarters well let down and all together it made for an easy moving girl.  Her strength of head kept her from moving along on the day, but certainly one I would love and highly likely to be great producer in the whelping box.

2nd SPARTA Z RZYMSKICH LEGIONOW (IMP POL) (MS K SZPAK)
My apologies to her owner but a very difficult to access white girl who’s lack of showmanship on the day cost her.  She was a bit coarse but had a strong enough head with fill under the eye.  A more masculine than feminine muzzle and look from the side.  Her front shoulder and pasterns were her biggest faults and would undoubtedly affect her movement and stance, but she was uncooperative in that area.  A bit more ring training would allow for a better portrait but just was not easy to critique on this day.  My apologies again.

1st CLANSMANN FLAME OF GORY (MR P CAMPBELL)
Gleaming smaller red and white with a nicely filled head.  Not as much turn as ideal with a touch of brow but a nice dark well-placed eye.  Lovely markings with a good bite.  Long neck into nice shoulder and front construction.  Adequate bone and clean feet.   Short back, nice rear angulation and a happy outgoing nature.  Presented well and a free and easy mover and her numerous virtues made her memorable as she is not overdone in any way and won the class on her soundness.

2nd SPARTA Z RZYMSKICH LEGIONOW (IMP POL) (MS K SZPAK)
Second in this class she was unfortunate to the bitch above.  This white girl with head markings ran into a real showgirl today, but this does not take away from her virtuous head with fill, width and power.  Lovely neck down into an above average shoulder.  Wonderful bone but would like a tighter stronger pastern.  Her feet could also tighten a notch.  Lovely level topline and a muscular and angulated rear.  Moved well all the ways of the ring.  Certainly battled for the class gave away a few small faults a terrific girl with admirable virtues.

1st MEDUSAMYNE LOVELY JUBBLY PUMPKIN (MISS A HIRST) 
PUMPKIN Super white girl with ear marks who took the class and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed.  Clean packed head with extremely good width and depth, packed to the end of her muzzle with perfect scissors bite.  Piercing eye lending to breath taking expression, nice ear set completes her headpiece.  Strong neck of good length leading into a well laid shoulder. Grand bone all the way down to her toes.  Short backed with good depth of brisket and well sprung ribs.  Rear angulation was ideal, and these qualities set her apart and more importantly allowed for the best mover on the day.  She glides while still covering the ground with power. A pleasure to watch as she never puts a foot wrong. BB RBIS BOS

2nd TULSADOOM MESHUGGENEH (MR & MRS D & T WESTWOOD) 
While second in this class she was the toughest decision of the day and was ultimately awarded Reserve Best Bitch.  She possessed nearly all the virtues of the class winner and fell short only on movement.  A head with length, strength and fill.  This white girl with an ear mark mirrors her class competitor in ideal construction and angulation.  Bone and feet are ideal.  She moves freely but with less power and she is a bit more jaunty which makes her seem like she is working a little harder at it.  Ties are not allowed, but this lady really made the decision tough because she is quality through and through and a testament to good breeding. RBB

1st TEIRWGWYN VOODOO DOLL (MR & MRS M & A DODD)
Nothing warms my heart like our seniors and this lady is timeless.  White with head markings, she has a gently curving profile which shows off her femininity and a lovely head with decent expression. She does have a mouth fault but if she were Stateside no one would notice.  Age has taken her topline a bit, but not her bone, angulation or feet.  She moves like she looks happy and her look at me attitude was a wonderful conclusion to the afternoon.  A credit to good breeding and great care.  My appreciation to her owner for bringing her out so we could enjoy each other.
